Ahead of the Curve: Empirical End-of-Life Performance Modeling of PyroThin Thermal Barriers

Cell barriers play a crucial role in both thermal propagation protection and the overall state of health (SOH) of the cells in EV (Electric Vehicle) modules or packs. However, EV module engineers often lack the time for long-term testing to inform their design decisions. Therefore, accurately predicting and planning for cell pad performance throughout the life cycle and to the end-of-life (EOL) is vital for ensuring battery safety and optimal pack performance. To enhance engineers’ confidence in their thermal propagation protection strategies as well as overall system performance, Aspen Aerogels has integrated real-life data with our forecasting models to improve lifecycle performance assessments and allow engineers to have increased confidence in their designs.

Topics include:

  • Evaluating the mechanical and thermal behavior of PyroThin cell barriers after thousands of cycles in real-world NMC modules
  • Comparing in-situ results with accelerated aging tests
  • Discussing the development and implementation of new end-of-life compression models based on empirical data

Mechanical & Thermal Performance You Can Trust Through EOL

Developed for pouch and prismatic applications, PyroThin cell-to-cell barriers help battery engineers achieve safety and performance goals for modules and packs with LFP, NMC, and solid-state chemistries.

Each PyroThin part combines Aspen’s patent-protected Aerogel Technology Platform® with our team’s comprehensive understanding of complex thermal runaway events in electric vehicles (EV) and energy storage systems (ESS).

About Us

Partner with Aspen Aerogels and leverage our 20+ years of proven excellence in manufacturing high-performance aerogels at scale. As a Tier 1 supplier for global automotive OEMs, we are proud that our PyroThin® thermal barriers have recently been honored with the Automotive News PACE Award and the Innovation Partnership Award. Cell pads are the first line of defense during a thermal runaway event, so choose a solution that performs under pressure. PyroThin combines unparalleled thermal propagation protection with mechanical resiliency through end-of-life (EOL). Third-party testing has shown that PyroThin stops thermal propagation at the cell-to-cell level for both pouch and prismatic applications. Our proprietary aerogel technology has tackled complex engineering challenges for over 20 years. OEM feedback confirms that their long-cycle mechanical testing aligns with our predictive models, validating PyroThin’s exceptional performance.
