01 · The Challenge

A 2-month schedule slip on a remote LNG project.

Scope had changed, the location was far from established industrial labor pools, and the workforce arrived largely untrained on cryogenic insulation.

  • 2-month schedule slippage. Project management needed an aggressive recovery plan.
  • Remote site, limited specialist labor. Far from US Gulf Coast cryogenic-insulation expertise.
  • Crews cross-trained from other trades. Under 20% started as qualified tradesmen; the rest had little construction experience.

02 · The Solution

Switch from PIR to Cryogel® Z after a head-to-head install demo.

Pre-construction, the EPC installed Cryogel® Z and PIR on identical pipes and drove them 1,000 miles by truck. PIR failed at the contraction joints; Cryogel® Z had zero failures and installed 31% faster.

  • Selected over PIR after internal install + durability testing. Mockup-based decision, not vendor claim.
  • 31% faster installation. Time savings absorbed crew scale-up without losing schedule.
  • Simplified wrap-and-tape application. Enabled the contractor to scale to 2,100 insulators with brief training.
  • Less storage space. Cryogel® Z required materially less on-site footprint, easing site logistics.
  • 18 months · zero warranty calls. No callbacks on any Cryogel® scope after first cargo.

03 · The Outcome

First cargo on time, despite the scope changes.

Cryogel® Z’s faster application absorbed the project’s late scope changes and enabled the labor scale-up needed to meet the first-gas-out milestone. The operator and the EPC both subsequently specified Cryogel® on follow-on projects.
