01 · The Challenge

A newly-constructed plant with widespread CUI.

Water-saturated fibrous insulation was causing excessive heat loss and process upsets at a brand-new facility.

  • Processes off baseline. Units were not performing as designed; thermal control was the suspected cause.
  • Water-saturated fibrous insulation. Caused both excessive heat loss and the start of corrosion under insulation.
  • Widespread CUI in a new plant. The failure was systemic — not a single-line issue.

02 · The Solution

Specify Pyrogel® XTE site-wide and run a long-term survey.

Pyrogel® XTE was installed on the 2008 build, the 2012 expansion, and then audited a decade later.

  • Installed on 2008 facility and 2012 expansion. Pyrogel® XTE deployed as the standard hot-service insulation across both phases.
  • Process instability resolved. Operator confirmed that the insulation substitution contributed materially to baseline restoration.
  • 2018 plant-wide survey. Pyrogel® XTE performing as new, with zero evidence of CUI on the underlying steel.
  • Reusable after inspection. Material can be removed for inspection and reinstalled — no replacement insulation required for maintenance.

After application of Pyrogel in 2008, it is reusable, so no additional insulation is required for maintenance.

03 · The Outcome

A 1/3-thickness, reusable system that paid for itself.

A decade after the original install, the operator reports that Pyrogel® XTE has eliminated the labor and material cost of routine insulation replacement during inspections — and reclaimed storage space at the same time (Pyrogel is 1/3 the thickness of mineral wool).
