C3 splitter at a chemical processing plant in Texas, USA.

Reusability provided long-term cost savings and superior logistics advantages.

A 340-ft × 28-ft C3 splitter was being re-commissioned at a re-purposed plant. Cryogel® Z was 40% lighter than the previous insulation, stored on scaffold, and — uniquely — removed and reinstalled across the turnaround.

01 · The Challenge

Re-commission an old asset for a new process.

A mothballed splitter was being brought back into service as part of a new propane-dehydrogenation (PDH) plant — combining new-build construction with a full turnaround.

  • 340-ft × 28-ft column re-commissioned. Combining new-build construction with a turnaround.
  • Asset repurposed for new service. Original insulation no longer fit the new operating profile.
  • Storage and logistics constraints. Limited footprint on the scaffold; rigid materials needed lots of trips.

02 · The Solution

Reusable Cryogel® Z survives a removal-and-reinstall cycle.

Cryogel® Z’s combination of light weight and flexibility allowed the insulation to come off the splitter, sit on scaffold during the TAR, and go back on after — without disposal.

  • 40% lighter than the prior insulation. Reduced load on the structure during install.
  • Stored on scaffold during the TAR. No off-site storage trip required.
  • Removed and reinstalled around the TAR. Reuse eliminated material disposal and replacement cost.
  • Reduced maintenance cost · earlier restart. Same Cryogel® back on the column post-TAR.

03 · The Outcome

Reuse delivered a logistics and cost advantage.

Cryogel® Z’s reusability avoided buying replacement insulation post-TAR and freed up scaffold space across the work window. The lighter, thinner format also delivered material handling and personnel-trip savings versus the prior rigid system (roughly an order of magnitude fewer crew trips per unit area).
