Aspen Aerogels® insulation for offshore pipe-in-pipe systems is being used around the globe. It provides
up to five times better thermal performance
than typical insulations. What’s more, Aspen Aerogels® achieves this with a lower profile, allowing for the reduction of outer pipe sizes. This smaller outer pipe size reduces the cost of steel, as well as installation costs because more pipe can be loaded onto reels on ships, resulting in fewer trips to sea to complete the installation.

Advantages of Aspen Aerogels® PIP Insulation
Low Conductivity Achieves Low U-Value for Pipelines
Passive System
Excellent temperature resistance
No vacuum sealing required
Fewer complexities of system and assembly
Carrier Pipe Diameter and Weight Savings
Maximize pipe transport given smaller carriers
Lay faster using smaller pipes
Project-Enabler
Enables Local Content
More Qualified Vessels
Lowest Available Installed Costs
|
In the traditional pipe-in-pipe construction used for an offshore oil well, Aspen Aerogels® enables the outer pipe to be reduced by at least one standard pipe size without impacting the U value of the system. This delivers substantial savings in both steel and installation costs.

Meeting the Need for Exceptional Insulation Performance for Long Tiebacks
OHTC: Aspen Aerogels® insulation deliver the lowest passive OHTC values for pipelines in either low temperature (minimum margin on cool-down) or high temperature (high temperature resistance) reservoirs.
COOL-DOWN: Aspen Aerogels® insulation minimize heat loss allowing better cool down times than other insulation materials.
PIPE SIZES: Aspen Aerogels® insulation allow smaller PiP configurations, reducing pipe costs, minimizing pipe volumes for transit and helping to reduce welding times during installation (very important for single and double joint installations).
WATER INJECTION LINES: Aspen Aerogels® insulation is used to protect inner polymer lining when used in outer steel jacketing. The thin insulation used protects the polymer linings against the high heat of welding operations.
EHPIP: Aspen Aerogels® insulation saves more power required during PIP operation than other thermal insulations. The insulations can easily accommodate heating lines or tracing lines on pipelines when needed. The insulation's broad operating temperature performance is not sensitive to local hot spots that might occur. The insulation can accommodate any shape or form the heat tracing may incur.
FIELD JOINTS: Aspen Aerogels® insulation can contribute to better isolation performance at the field joints. Traditional materials like Rockwool can take the high heat but deliver poor isolation performance incurring higher insulation costs on the flowline. Aspen's Pyrogel® insulation can deliver high heat resistance while delivering low U value performance. This applies to both PIP and single Pipe field joints (when hybridized).
SINGLE PIPES: Aspen Aerogels® insulation can be combined with offshore field joint insulation (PP, GSPU) to form better isolated shallow water field joints. The improvement in insulation value at the field joints helps to reduce wet insulation costs for mainline insulation. Very significant advantages for insulated import or export lines.
