Aspen Aerogels’ blanket products can be used with or without encapsulation. From roll
goods, blanket sections can be cut using common tools, viz, metal blade, hot knife, laser or
water saw. With the flexibility typical of most soft goods, each blanket section is easily handled.
Many of today’s commonly used encapsulation methods can be applied to aerogel blankets
without modification. Polymer sheets, glass, ceramic or carbon facing layers, and steel have
been used successfully to encapsulate aerogel blankets for its in-use form. Blanket plies can be
laminated to each other or to facing layers with standard glues. Mechanical bonding is also
possible by sewing or riveting encapsulation layers, creating an aerogel-filled pocket. Ease of
fabrication allows aerogel to act as a drop-in replacement for many insulation systems.
Aspen Aerogels’ Applications Group is highly trained and experienced in each of the methods
above and is ready to assist you with your aerogel fabrication needs.
